10 Alzheimer's Communication Tips

Here are some tips on how to communicate with someone who has Alzheimer's Disease.

  1. Never argue, instead agree

  2. Never reason, instead divert

  3. Never shame, instead distract

  4. Never lecture, instead reassure

  5. Never say "Remember", instead reminisce

  6. Never say "I told you", instead repeat/regroup

  7. Never say "You can't", instead do what they can

  8. Never command/demand, instead ask/model

  9. Never condescend, instead encourage

  10. Never force, instead reinforce

Try these tips to improve your communication skills with your loved one or client. Good communication will help you build a better relationship with the one who has AD and will help make your caregiving less stressful. You will also be able to handle difficult behavior that you may encounter better because you understand that it's the disease, not the person, that is causing the behavior. Remember that we can change our behavior or the physical environment, and that can help change your loved one or client's behavior.
